Michael D. Kaufman completed his undergraduate training at the University of Chicago receiving his BA in 1963.
He then went to law school at the University of Pennsylvania where he received his LLB (the predecessor to the current JD degree) in 1966. He was an editor of the Law Review and graduated cum laude.
In 1967 he received an LLM from the NYU School of Law where he was an Arthur Garfield Hays Civil Liberties-Civil Rights Fellow.
Immediately thereafter he was a Reginald Heber Smith Community Lawyer fellow and worked for the Los Angeles Neighborhood Legal Services Society program for one year representing individuals in all areas of civil law who were unable to afford counsel .
For the next 17 years Mr. Kaufman worked for MFY Legal Services, a federally funded legal services program in New York City. He was a staff attorney and then a managing attorney in neighborhood law offices, a staff attorney in the Law Reform and Appeals Unit and then the Managing Attorney of the Law Reform and Appeals Unit.
For the last 20 years, until 2010, Mr. Kaufman worked for a large law firm developing computer systems.
He left that firm and has now resumed the practice of law and besides having a general practice he specializes in the fields of Education Law and Landlord and Tenant law.
